Centennial Inheritance: Turkish Red Crescent Prisoners of War Letters Exhibition
Paket Postanesi, Upper Floor / 10.00-22.00
The "Centennial Inheritance: Turkish Red Crescent Prisoners of War Letters Exhibition," organized in collaboration with the Turkish Red Crescent, the Presidency of Communications, and TRT, has opened for visit at Paket Postanesi, Upper Floor.
The exhibition features selected prisoner letters entrusted to the Turkish Red Crescent to be delivered to their addresses from different prisoner camps in distant corners of the world; prisoner cards and registers belonging to Turkish and foreign soldiers; receipts for money sent by prisoner families to prisoners located in various places; stamps used during the war years; envelope samples found in the Turkish Red Crescent archives; photographs of prisoner camps and prisoners; and a video film depicting the war years and captivity.
Comprising letters entrusted to the Turkish Red Crescent by soldiers fighting for the defense of the homeland, aiming to inform their families and receive news from their own families, the "Centennial Inheritance: Turkish Red Crescent Prisoners of War Letters Exhibition" is compiled from the translation of 75 prisoner registers, 127 prisoner lists, 25,504 prisoner letters, and 308,645 prisoner cards found in the Turkish Red Crescent archives into today's Turkish.
Throughout wars, letters written by Turkish and foreign soldiers in prisoner camps to their families and letters sent by families to prisoner soldiers have, for various reasons, been unable to reach their addresses. With the efforts of the Turkish Red Crescent, it is aimed to deliver these historical legacies that have reached today to the living families of prisoners after 100 years.
You can visit the exhibition, which is open to everyone and free of charge, every day of the week from 10:00 to 22:00 at Paket Postanesi, Upper Floor, located on the Karaköy side of Galataport Istanbul.
