Come With Us On Coffee's Journey
Paket Postanesi, Upper Floor
The exhibition highlights three main topics:
• Coffee and Coffeehouses: This section explores how coffee, first cultivated in Ethiopia and Yemen and spread by Sufi dervishes, became a multifaceted serving tradition in Istanbul, the imperial capital, during the 1500s. It also examines how European travelers and merchants described coffee as a “Turkish custom” and how coffeehouse culture significantly contributed to art, culture, politics, and economics, particularly between the 17th and 19th centuries.
• Coffee Cultivation and Climate Change: This section discusses the characteristics of the coffee plant, the main coffee species, the challenges of coffee farming, and the recent threats posed by global climate change to coffee cultivation and supply chains. It also covers the first coffee cultivation experiments in Türkiye.
• Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi’s Legacy: The third section details the institution’s history, dating back to 1871, and its current production and export activities, which have played a vital role in preserving Turkish coffee culture.
In addition to these main sections, special areas designed for Paket Postanesi feature unique historical content, such as how Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi managed shipments outside the city via Paket Postanesi until the mid-1950s and stories from letters of order sent by grocers, nut sellers, and coffee vendors from the most remote corners of Anatolia.
Visitors can also explore a “pop-up” store showcasing Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi coffee products, along with historic coffee tools such as coffee cups, cezves, ibriks, roasting, and grinding equipment. Coffee tasting events and seminars on Turkish and global coffee traditions are planned to be held in the workshop area on the same floor.
