Istanbul Modern presents “Beyond the Horizon,” a major solo exhibition showcasing the artistic journey of Ömer Uluç (1931–2010).
Featuring works spanning from the 1960s to 2010, the exhibition highlights the artist’s innovative approach and diverse use of materials. The exhibition includes drawings on paper, acrylic on canvas, collages, and sculptures, along with works created using rubber, felt, aluminum, acrylic sheets, PVC, and polyester.
About the artist:
Born in 1931, Ömer Uluç graduated from Robert College in 1953 and initially studied engineering and then art in the USA. The artist, who joined the group called “Attic Painters” (Tavanarası Ressamları) founded by Nuri İyem in 1951, later lived in Paris and London in 1965, the USA and Mexico in 1972–1973, Nigeria from 1974 to 1977, and in Paris and Istanbul from 1982 until his death in 2010. Uluç, who created an album of creatures featuring humans, animals, and supernatural beings —with a sharp sense of irony and humor— was influenced by his journeys and life in various geographies, and remains one of the artists who has consistently revitalized the spirit of discovery and exploration in modern art.
